This course examines the ethical and legal principles that govern the professional practice of clinical psychology. It emphasizes the professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities of clinical psychologists toward clients, society, and healthcare and educational institutions. The course introduces students to major ethical standards and professional principles, including confidentiality and privacy, informed consent, professional competence, professional boundaries, respect for clients’ rights and dignity, and ethical decision-making. It also addresses key legal issues relevant to clinical practice, including professional liability, clinical documentation and record keeping, psychologists’ responsibilities and obligations, court testimony, and the legal and ethical management of high-risk cases involving child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, and threats of self-harm or harm to others.
